Valerie Cassel Oliver, Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts


This talk considers the history of black artists working in abstraction beginning in the 1950s to the present. In this meditation, Cassel Oliver considers how artists have engaged in abstract painting as an act of resistance, as a marker of identity, as narrative, and as innovative form.
