Dancing in Circles in the Arts of India and Its Neighbors

In The Farrell Auditorium

Forrest McGill, Wattis Senior Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

Dance is regarded as one of the most important subjects in visual arts in India and neighboring countries. This talk will focus on the circle dances performed by Buddhist and Hindu gods and deities, and how dance can convey creative energy and eroticism, the doom-laden power of destruction, or the prospect of transcendence.

Presented in partnership with East Asian Studies, Washington University in St. Louis
