In the Strauss Black Box Theatre at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center
Escape to the fantastic world of opera with OTSL’s Opera on the Go! program, featuring an in-person, semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1879 comic opera The Pirates of Penzance.
Workshops designed for ages 6–14, admission includes three workshops: Music and Drama, Character and Movement, and Stage Makeup!
Length: 90-minutes (50 minutes for workshops and approximately 35 minutes for the opera performance)
This program includes:
- 5-minutes: Introduction in the performance space with full touring company. Following introductions, the group will be broken into 3 workshop groups – 2 groups will be escorted to separate spaces and 1 group will stay in performance space.
- 15-minutes: Workshop rotation 1 – once complete, groups will rotate to the next workshop.
- 15-minutes: Workshop rotation 2 – once complete, groups will rotate to the next workshop.
- 15-minutes: Workshop rotation 3 – once complete, groups will return to the performance space.
- 5-10 minutes: Pause for the singers to get into costumes
- 30-minutes: Performance of abridged production of The Pirates of Penzance
- Brief Q&A if time allows
Music & Drama Workshop
Music is a vital part of an opera. Students will discover how music can create a mood, setting or even help to identify characters. Students will also explore how opera uses the same themes they hear and experience every day in popular music.
Character & Movement Workshop
Students will take part in an exploration of how movement is used to better portray a character onstage.
Makeup Workshop
Singers must master basic make-up techniques to fully establish their character’s age, personality, and appearance. Students will learn a few of these basic skills as they see participants transformed before their eyes.

Located in the heart of Kirkwood's bustling downtown, the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center (KPAC) features a 529 seat Ross Family Theatre and 150 seat Strauss Black Box Theatre. KPAC is located at the corner of South Taylor Avenue and Monroe Avenue in downtown Kirkwood.
