Finley Frankfurter is a 15-year-old fisherwoman who is terrible at fishing. H.S. Crank is a grumpy old lighthouse keeper who has been sitting for 20 years in the dark. Together, this unlikely pair begins an adventure through the ocean to find the Elixir of Life, an elusive remedy that will save Finley’s father from a mysterious illness. On their journey, the pair encounter mermaids and pirates, whirlpools and their worst fears, and finally a new understanding of the meaning of family, friendship, and belief in yourself.
Guinevere “Gwenny” Govea began Spells of the Sea in quarantined isolation and, with Anna Pickett, developed it into a podcast during the pandemic. Now, this unique tale breathes new life on the stage in this world premiere!

COVID-19 Mitigation Policy: Your health and safety are our top priorities.
At Metro Theater Company, we care about the health, wellness, and enjoyment of all our patrons, staff, and artists. As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 health crisis, our policies are guided by public health recommendations for our region. Should caseloads dramatically shift during the run of Spells of the Sea, the following policies may adjust in the best interest of protecting audiences. Effective January 2, 2023, below are our recommendations for our patrons to help ensure that you and our artists remain safe and healthy when visiting Metro Theater Company.
Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test is no longer required to attend performances.
To protect artists on stage, the first two rows of seating at the Grandel are not available for sale. To ensure that our shows continue for the enjoyment of all, we strongly recommend that patrons wear a mask during MTC performances. Additionally, if you are feeling unwell, please stay at home - we would be happy to exchange your tickets for virtual streaming tickets or tickets to a live performance at a later date. Tickets can be exchanged to a later performance time until showtime for each performance. We will make every effort to ensure your new tickets are comparable to your original tickets, but cannot guarantee if availability does not permit.
All MTC personnel in the building are vaccinated.
Please note that every Saturday at 4 pm performance of Spells of the Sea offers socially distant seating for those with heightened medical concerns.
These plans are subject to change.
All purchases are final. Should you not be able to attend, live performance tickets can be exchanged into a different live or virtual performance ticket at any time.
