CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST: MICKALENE THOMAS

In the Farrell Auditorium

New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas works on a larger-than-life scale using diverse media to explore black female identity and representation. Thomas will discuss her work within the themes of beauty, gender, and race as well as her inspiration drawn from the history of art and contemporary popular culture. Joining Thomas for this on-stage conversation and interview will be Lisa Melandri, executive director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Simon Kelly, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Her photograph Din, Une Trés Belle Négresse 1 (2012, printed 2015) will be on view in Gallery 249 at the Saint Louis Art Museum beginning August 30. Her exhibition Mentors, Muses and Celebrities is on view at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis from September 8 through December 31.
