Out of concern for the health and safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in response to recent announcements from Mayor Lyda Krewson and County Executive Sam Page, the Art Museum is suspending all public programs through April 30. This suspension begins on Sunday, March 15 at 5 pm. Art Museum galleries and exhibitions will remain open during regularly scheduled public hours. Canceled programs include gallery talks, daily tours, Member events, lectures, SLAM Underground and Family Sundays.

In The Farrell Auditorium
Representations of rural life and its terrain by Barbizon painters often celebrate France as an integral nation, its urban sophistication buttressed by the abiding continuities of the countryside. But one need not search far for motifs showing just how precarious and desperate rural life could be—perhaps included out of sympathy with current political discontents, but more fundamentally serving to complicate beauty and drama in nature with an existential recognition of its indifference to human endeavor.
Friday’s keynote lecture and Saturday’s symposium programming can be attended together or as stand-alone events. Each day’s programming is ticketed separately to allow for this flexibility. Entry into the exhibition on Friday evening and Saturday is included with the purchase of a ticket to Saturday’s symposium programming.
Friday's keynote lecture is presented in partnership with the Department of Art History and Archaeology, Washington University in St. Louis.
