Where Are We Going?

In The Farrell Auditorium

Dr. Caroline Vercoe, Senior Lecturer, Art History, The University of Auckland, New Zealand

The legacy of Gauguin's life and art is reconsidered in relation to contemporary artists in the Pacific who explore and rework his now iconic representations. While much has been written about Gauguin's life and work in Polynesia, surprisingly little attention has been paid to contemporary artistic responses from the region. Dr. Vercoe will locate Gauguin's work and legacy within contemporary Pacific art and visual culture, with a particular focus on his paintings of Polynesian women.
