Join Hannah Segrave, associate curator of European Art to 1800, for a Pride Month talk celebrating one of England’s most intriguing and trailblazing sculptors.
Artist, author, actress, and aristocrat, Anne Seymour Damer defied expectations to become one of the most notorious sculptors in eighteenth-century England—a woman who carved out a place in a male-dominated art world and paid the price in scandal. Segrave will offer a fascinating look at the Museum’s recent acquisition of Damer’s marble bust Peniston Lamb in the Guise of Mercury, and explore the remarkable life of a queer artist who sculpted royalty, befriended Napoleon, and forged her own path in the real era of Bridgerton.
